Geothermal heating of municipal buildings in the town of Sapareva Bania
Subject to reconstruction with the implementation of this project is the heating system of “St. Anna” kindergarten. The project implementation contributes for reduction of the air pollution in the town and of the health risks for its residents.

Project objective
The substitution of the existing thermal supply of the kindergarten with geothermal energy eliminates the existing boiler, operating on liquid fuel. The heating method provides for the use of hot water as heat-transfer medium. Geothermal water is a renewable energy source, free of noxious gases, dust and soot emissions. Another substantial advantage of the geothermal energy use for heating is the lack of explosion and ignition risks for the children and the staff, as well as lack of noise and vibrations. Heating costs are considerably lower.

Project Technical Description
The geothermal energy heating of “St. Anna” kindergarten is achieved through three activities:

• Connection of the building to the central heat pipeline
The heat supply of the kindergarten is provided by the constructed heat-exchange station at the geothermal spring, where hot geothermal water heats the transfer medium – potable water, and transfers it by a heat pipeline through distribution branches to the consumers. By construction of a branch of 450 m., the kindergarten is connected to the already constructed central heat pipeline.

• Reconstruction of the existing boiler department of the building
The domestic heat pipeline, water distribution and circulation systems of the existing boiler department of the kindergarten are replaced with new, suitable for the proposed change in the heating principle.
• Reconstruction of the premises of the building
The pipes of the heating installation and the existing heating panels in the premises of the building were worn-out and are replaced within the project framework.

Project Financing
The total project cost of the project, including implementation of the whole project for reconstruction of the heating systems of the five main public buildings in the town for operation on geothermal energy amounts to 402 490 BGL, VAT included.
The heating system of the kindergarten is reconstructed with the financial contribution of the Swiss Confederation through the National Trust Eco Fund (NTEF).
The NTEF financing of 74 226 BGL, was allocated for connection of “St. Anna” kindergarten to the central heat pipeline and for reconstruction of the existing boiler department of the building.
Co financing of the project is provided by the Municipality of Sapareva Banya.
