Kyustendil is situated in Southwestern Bulgaria, in the southern part of the Kyustendil Valley, closer to the northern slopes of Osogovo Mountain. The town is located 86 km southwest of capital Sofia, 70 km northwest of Blagoevgrad, 23 km from state border with the Republic of Macedonia (check-point Gjueshevo) and 32 km from state border with the Republic of Serbia (check-point Oltomantsi). The traditionally important route: Western Europe – Balkans – Asia Minor has passed through the Region of Kyustendil since the Middle Ages. The town is administrative center of region with population over 55 000 inhabitants. The climate is trans-continental, but with Mediterranean influence. One of the most valuable treasures of the town is the mineral water - there are more than 40 mineral springs in the town. The curative properties of Kyustendil's mineral waters have been known since ancient times, when the town was named Pautalia (a town of springs).
