Kostenets is situated at the east slopes of Rila Mountain, 75 km from capitol Sofia and near to towns Belovo and Septemvri. Maritsa River flows through the municipality's area. Its water is used for domestic and industrial purposes and for irrigation. The town is an administrative centre with population around 10 000 inhabitants. Region is popular with his thermal mineral water resources. The resort Momin Prohod has established itself as an important therapeutic and rehabilitation centre in Bulgaria. In the beginning of XX century two important factories – paper mill and for safety matches was built in the town.
